new music roundup #3

20241012

hey! this is coming out saturdays now. i realized that obviously a lot of music comes out on friday and i need time to listen to it before posting about it.

verdant by saeph

saeph · verdant

porter robinson’s 2021 album nurture featured two instrumental tracks: wind tempos and dullscythe. three years later, these tracks have spawned an entire soundcloud microgenre of imitators called “botanica.”

the botanica scene has a lot of artists like shameless. and viznode, who stick pretty close to the formula laid out by dullscythe and wind tempos, and create these stunning, linear tracks that feel almost like film scores to movies that don’t exist.

saeph is more in the category of artists like vai5000 and phritz, who borrow liberally from the rest of nurture and fuse porter’s unique approach to granular synthesis with a wide range of other genres (trap, dubstep, uk garage, drum and bass, etc) to create music that’s a little more poppy or dance-y, maybe something you could play in a (still pretty strange) dj set.

anyway, i’ve been trying to make some things that sounds basically exactly like this project from saeph for a couple months and i’m going to go delete all my ableton projects now.

cool world by chat pile

i haven’t been super plugged into the sludge/noise/metal/“loud rock” scene in quite a while, but chat pile is one of the most exciting bands out there if you like music that sounds like it could kill you, so they’ll always pull me back in.

impossible light by uboa

this isn’t new music because it came out in july, but i was looking at the flenser website re: the new chat pile album and saw that there was also a new uboa album this year??? why didn’t anyone say anything!! the origin of my depression is one of the most significant noise/experimental releases of the past decade, and it’s been five years! anyway this one is also real good.

AH FUCK DUDE NOW I’M CRYIN IN THE CLUB

kaleidoscope by TURQUOISEDEATH

a very atmospheric and unique breakcore project, newly released on dismiss yourself.

sabrina-carpenter.taste.xaevremix by xaev

xaev+ · sabrina-carpenter.taste.xaevremix

it’s a remix of taste by sabrina carpenter by xaev. if that doesn’t get you on board, what will?

psychic attack by machine girl

all the singles from the lead-up to the new machine girl album have been great. super excited to be seeing them live next month. this new material has been an evolution for them in a way that’s difficult to quantify – it feels like a meeting points somewhere between their older, more popular material (WLFGRL) and their more recent, more abrasive material.

the new sound by geordie greep

geordie greep was the frontman of british rock experimentalists black midi, who called it quits earlier this year. now he’s released his first solo album and it’s easily better than anything black midi ever did (though i say this as not a huge black midi fan.) if you like steely dan, you simply must listen to this album.

so nauseous can’t sleep it off by kimochiii

i also have new music out this week, back in the dariacore mines after an excursion into botanica land.
