new music roundup #1

20240927

gonna try and do posts like this regularly, maybe once a week or so? since this is the inaugural one i’ll include some music not from this week but from earlier this month that i’ve been enjoying.

just.dansen by xaev

somehow i totally missed that almost a month ago xaev put out a new album. it’s got some uk garage, some jungle, and some electro house/complextro type stuff. this is substantially more laid back than xaev’s normal totally deranged sound, but he pulls it off really well.

viscera by astrid

i had been seeing astrid on my tiktok fyp for ages without even realizing she made music, but i finally made the connection because she’s opening for saoirse dream at a show i’m going to on saturday. there’s nothing amazingly groundbreaking here but it’s a well executed blend of cloud rap, hyperpop and dubstep.

NEW JEANS + by SEBii

SEBiišŸ’« Ā· NEW JEANS + [prod. kimj + sebseb122]

i was really excited to listen to VVFROST when it came out because i love both SEBii and frost children but i wound up not being super into it; i just think their styles don’t gel super well. this track is much more my speed; i love the super rubbery track production and SEBii’s flow is irresistable as always.

daijoubu desu by frost children and HARU NEMURI

speaking of frost children, this is a collab i could never have imagined happening but i’m very glad its here, and i’m also very happy that this is just a taste of a full EP these two are doing together! the beat is crazy, everyone’s verses are really fun, i like this a lot.

girl EDM (disc 1) by ninjirachi

it’s edm, for girls. this is a full-length follow-up to an EP of the same name released by ninajirachi earlier this year, and it’s pretty good. the full length is a bit of a mixed bag, but the kind where some of the tracks are really good and some are just ok, so definitely still worth listening to.

cascade by floating points

it’s the new floating points! it’s good music to use the computer by. it’s possibly the first good tech house album ever released. it’s not as good as promises but it’s hard to compare because it’s so different. it’s also a lot more conventional as far as dance music goes than earlier floating points releases, and it doesn’t have any of the non-dance-music excursions that characterised albums like crush and elaenia. still listening to it a bunch, though!

in waves by jamie xx

i was excited for this album because i loved in colour but while it’s fine, it’s nothing special. i honestly hear so much white guy house music just living in LA that even really well executed stuff like this kinda bores me.
